REV. HUGHES
Rev. Samuel B. Hughes of Novato, 80, a Baptist minister and pastor for 50 years, died yesterday at a local convalescent hospital after a long illness.
Rev. Hughes had been a pastor in Texas, Alabama, New Mexico and California until he retired in 1964 and moved to Marin. He lived at 8 Garden Court.
While in retirement he served as an interim pastor at the First Baptist Church of Novato and at other Baptist churches in Northern California.
For 15 years he had been “pastor builder” for the state Baptist convention of Texas, where his task was to go into suburban areas and establish churches. He was a native of Bastrop, La.
Surviving are his wife, Florrie Hughes, of Novato; two daughters, Orine Suffern of Corte Madera and Mary Beitel of Charlevoix, Mich.; a sister, Lottie Manning of Bastrop, La.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the First Baptist Church of Novato. Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was survived by another sister, Mrs. Molly Burnett. In addition, he was the brother of the late Hunter Hughes and Robert Hughes.
