JOHN E. McATEE

John E. McAtee of Topeka, Kan., a World War II pilot and son of a former Sausalito mayor, died Monday in a Topeka hospital. He was 58.

McAtee was a native of San Francisco. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester J. McAtee. The elder McAtee was a former San Francisco judge and Sausalito mayor and councilman.

McAtee was a pilot in World War II and flew the lead plane in the second squadron during the attack on the Ploesti oil fields in Hungary. He also participated in many other flying raids during the war. He received the Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He lived in Marin for a short time after the war.

He lived in Topeka for the past 10 years where he worked as an advertising salesman for the Topeka Times Newspaper.

He is survived by his stepmother, Zora McAtee of Oroville, and a brother, Sylvester J. McAtee Jr. of Burlingame.

A military funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas.
