Realtor Gladys Mekisich dies

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mission San Rafael Arcangel for Gladys Evelyn Mekisich, longtime Marin real estate agent.

Mrs. Mekisich died Tuesday, March 1, 1988, at Marin General Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born in Petaluma and was a graduate of Petaluma High School.

She worked for Moore’s Men’s Clothing store, Fireman’s Fund Insurance Cos. and Hartford Fire Insurance Cos. in San Francisco before moving to Marin in 1948 with her husband, Anton. They operated the Coffee Cup restaurant in San Anselmo until 1955.

Since 1948, Mrs. Mekisich had been a real estate agent in Marin County. She had been a real estate broker since 1956 and owner of County Wide Properties, Inc., for many years before working under her own name. In 1977, she was voted Realtor of the Year by the Marin County Board of Realtors.

In 1982, she was named an honorary member of the board in recognition of her outstanding service to the profession. She also was director of the California State Association of Realtors and served on a panel overseeing real estate curriculum at Marin Community College.

Since 1983, she had been a member and newsletter editor of the Soroptomist International of Marin. Her volunteer efforts in the community focused on mental health issues and the welfare of women, children and the family.

She enjoyed opera and rock and roll music and was an avid sports fan. Her favorite pastimes were dancing, gardening and solving crossword puzzles.

Mr. Mekisich died earlier.

Surviving are a son, Anthony Mekisich of Mill Valley; a sister, Edna Meroney of Santa Rosa; three stepchildren; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.

The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday at Chapel of the Hills mortuary in San Anselmo.

The family prefers memorial donations to Soroptomist International of Marin or Marin Abused Women’s Services.
