ALICE ROTH

Private family service was held yesterday at the Redwood Chapel for Alice Roth, long-time teacher at Lu Sutton School.

Mrs. Roth died Friday at her home following a long illness. She was 62.

She moved to Novato in 1921 with her parents. Her father, the late William T. Simmons, operated a meat market on Grant Avenue for many years.

She attended the old Grant Avenue School, San Rafael High School, and San Jose State College and then taught school in Turlock for six years.

During World War II, she returned to Novato to teach at the Grant Avenue School under Principal Lu Sutton who had been one of her teachers in grade school.

She married George J. Roth, a real estate broker and the couple lived briefly in Napa before returning to Novato. Mrs. Roth taught second grade at Lu Sutton from 1959 until 1977.

She was a member of the Novato chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a retired member of the Novato Teachers Association and California State Employees Association.

Besides her husband she is survived by her mother, Laura L. Simmons, of Novato; and two sisters, Marjorie Jane Lins, of North Sacramento, and Barbara Anne Landmesser, of Orangevale, Sacramento County.

Burial was at Bahia Valley Memorial Park.

The family prefers memorial contributions to Hospice of Marin or the American Cancer Society.
