Sophia Morris Kent, 79

Sophia Morris Kent, long active in civic affairs in Marin and a founder of the Marin Grape Festival 56 years ago, died yesterday at her San Francisco home. She was 79.

Through her husband, the late William Kent Jr., she was related to the pioneer Marin family which donated Muir Woods to the public trust and developed Kent Woodlands and Seadrift in Stinson Beach.

Mrs. Kent lived in Marin and San Francisco for most of her life after her graduation in 1918 from Radcliffe College in Massachusetts.

She was one of the founders of the Grape Festival in 1920 in Kentfield. The event still take place annually.

Mrs. Kent served on the boards of Katherine Branson School in Ross, Sunnyhills School in San Anselmo. Radcliffe and the San Francisco Museum of Art.

In 1966 she was named the first woman member of the Marin General Hospital Foundation.

Her husband, a San Francisco businessman, died in 1964.

Mrs. Kent is survived by a son, William Kent III of San Francisco, and two daughters, Elizabeth Soloski of San Anselmo and Eleanor Schermerhorn of San Francisco; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, San Francisco. Burial will be private.
