MERVIN GOOTHERTS

Mervin Gootherts, 60, of Corte Madera, a retired Larkspur school principal and musician, died Thursday morning at a local hospital after a sudden illness.

Gootherts had gone to the hospital with severe chest pains, according to the Marin County coroner’s office.

He had been the first principal of Henry C. Hall School in Larkspur in 1959 and served until his retirement in 1976.

He also played trumpet with the Ernie Hecksher and Jimmy Diamond bands at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco ,during and after his school years.

Gootherts was a member of the Bohemian Club, Musician’s Union, Local No. 6 of San Francisco and the California Teachers Association.

Gootherts was a graduate of San Francisco State University and served in the army during World War II. He taught for one year in Daly City, moved to Marin in 1952 and taught at Larkspur-Corte Madera School before becoming principal at Henry Hall.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Gootherts, and two sons, Thomas Gootherts of Larkspur and Chris Gootherts of Petaluma.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 23 at the Redwoods Presbyterian Church, 110 Magnolia Ave., Larkspur.
