IRENE PIERCE
A funeral for Irene Pierce, 83, of Sausalito, a former Sausalito teacher and descendant of members of the Portola and Anza expeditions, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Russell and Gooch Funeral Chapel in Mill Valley.
She died today at her home.
A native of San Francisco, she would have been 84 Friday. She was a fifth-generation Californian.
She moved with her family to Sausalito in 1902 and attended elementary school there. She graduated from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley and the former San Francisco Normal School in 1916. It later became San Francisco State University.
Mrs. Pierce was a Sausalito school teacher for about 21 years until retiring in 1951. She had also taught in West Marin for two years when she first began teaching.
Her husband, Lawrence Pierce, a house painter, died in 1967.
Mrs. Pierce had lived in Sausalito most of her life except for her first years in San Francisco and four years in Oregon.
She is survived by a son, George Pierce of Sausalito; three daughters, Lawrene Jones of Sausalito and Patricia Stephens and Martha Busher, both of Novato; a brother, Robert Gallagher of Brentwood; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that contributions be made to favorite charities.
Visitation will be held at the funeral chapel after 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.
