Harry Custis Moorhead
Passed away at Marin General Hospital July 23, 2002 at the age of 84.
He was predeceased by his older brothers, J. Upshur and Thomas C. Moorhead of Washington, D.C., and his former wife Doris Moorhead.
Born Henry Custis Moorhead on January 14, 1918 in Washington, D.C. to John Upshur Moorhead and Lilian Coffey Chew. He was the 5th great grandson of Martha Custis Washington, wife of the first president of the United States. His great grandfather, Titian J. Coffey, was Asst. Attorney General during Abraham Lincoln's administration. His family resided in Washington, D.C. for many years.
Mr. Moorhead was educated at the Choate School in Wallingford, Conn. and graduated from Yale University in 1940. After graduating, he moved west and settled in Southern California and worked for Douglas Aircraft during the war. Mr. Moorhead relocated to San Francisco and was employed as Sales Manager for Talon, Inc. He married Doris Bushman in 1949 and started a family. Mr. Moorhead was a longtime resident of Hillsborough, San Mateo and most recently of Marin, CA. He was a former member of the Peninsula Tennis Club in Burlingame and the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon.
Mr. Moorhead enjoyed sailing the bay, playing tennis and reading. He was a student of history and enjoyed intellectual conversation. He was a devoted and loving father who cherished his family.
Mr. Moorhead is survived by his three children, Cynthia Cohen of San Mateo, Martha Craig and Peter Moorhead of San Rafael, CA and four grandchildren, Frank and Daniel Cohen and Natalie and Parke Moorhead.
