EVELYN D. ROYSTON
Evelyn Dunwoody Royston, longtime Mill Valley resident and widely known designer, died Friday in her home after a long illness. She was 60.
She was a partner in the Royston and German Couturier shop in San Francisco where she created fashions using fabrics she collected in worldwide travels.
Born in Adin, Modoc County, and reared in Shasta County, she earned a degree in decorative arts at the University of California in Berkeley. She took graduate studies in landscape architecture and was an industrial designer during World War II.
After the war, she practiced landscape architecture with the firm of Eckbo Royston and Williams. She married the landscape architect, Robert N. Royston, now of the Royston, Hanamoto, Abey and Alley firm of Mill Valley.
She turned to clothing design about 20 years ago and in 1964 co-founded the San Francisco shop.
Last October, despite her illness, she realized a lifelong dream by visiting the People’s Republic of China.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Michel Ann Royston of Hat Creek, Shasta County, and Tonia Lee Royston of New York City, and a son, Curtis Robert Royston of New York City.
A private family service has been held, but a gathering for friends will be announced later.
The family prefers contributions to the Hospice of Marin, 77 Mark Drive, Suite 6, San Rafael 94903.
