Death

MATTHEW GILLIGAN, an old resident of San Rafael and proprietor of the Philadelphia Shoe Store, died suddenly in San Francisco last Sunday. He was riding on a street car dummy, apparently in the best of health, when he lurched forward and fell to the street. When bystanders attempted to raise him, he was dead. Mr. GILLIGAN first appeared here as a liveryman about 30 years ago. He did a prosperous business, sold out to advantage, and emigrated to Nevada, where he opened a shoe store which had an immense trade in the old flush days. He made fortunes, but a mania for stock gambling swallowed up all his gains and when the lean years came, he had little left. In boom times, he purchased the Central Hotel property, but that too went the same way as the balance. Some years ago, he gained a widespread renown in connection with the Fair case, certain important events relating to the litigation being fixed by the date of the arrival of GILLIGAN in San Rafael with a famous hack, which he had driven from Virginia City to San Rafael.
