Pioneer of Marin County Taken by Death
Mrs. Jessie Deffenbach Sollom, 68, granddaughter of the first English-speaking citizen of Marin County, died at her home on Locust Avenue, Mill Valley, last week.
Mrs. Sollem was the granddaughter of Juan Read, and was born in the old adobe house on the original Spanish grant of Rancho Saucelito, where her grandfather in 1834 built the old sawmill which gave the name to the town of Mill Valley.
Mrs. Sollom and her sister, May Deffenbach of Mill Valley, and her brother, Thomas B. Deffenbach, inherited the property from Read, who married Hilarita Sanchez, daughter of the then commandant of San Francisco Presidio.
Mrs. Sollom was one of the founders of the Outdoor Art Club of Mill Valley, and active in the affairs of her parish ther, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. During World War I she was a uniformed American Red Cross worker.
Surviving is her husband, Cuthbert J. Sollom, a native of England; her sister and brother; her daughter, Mrs. Roy Mills of Sonoma; her son, Oliver Sollom, Mill Valley, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were from the Russell Chapel, Mill Valley, with interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael.
