John J. Varney

A Mass of Christian Burial for John Jacob Varney of Sonoma will be celebrated tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Mission San Raphael in San Rafael.

Varney, a seven-year resident of Sonoma, died in a Sonoma hospital Tuesday after a long illness. He was 86.

Varney, a native of San Francisco, moved to Mill Valley in 1906 after the earthquake.

In 1919, Varney and his brothers, Tony and John (sic), founded the Varney Brothers Hardware and Plumbing Co., in Mill Valley. He retired as proprietor of the business in 1946.

Varney served as a volunteer Mill Valley fireman as a young man. He was a member of the Sonoma chapter of Sons in Retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette V. Varney of Sonoma; two sons, John F. Varney of Sonoma and Richard C. Varney of Mill Valley; two sisters, Lucy Ridgaway and Edith Richardson, both of San Francisco; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Rosary will be recited today at 8 p.m. at Bates, Evans and Fehrensen Mortuary in Sonoma. Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.
