Former Police Chief Antone Quadros, 80

Antone A. Quadros, a native of Sausalito and a former chief of police in that city, died yesterday at a local convalescent hospital after a long illness. He was 80.

Quadros joined the Sausalito police force in the early 1930s and was named chief in 1937. He served as chief for about four years before resigning and going to work as a guard at the Marinship shipyards during World War II.

After the war, he worked briefly as a guard at San Quentin Prison before taking a job as a patrolman for the Mill Valley police force. He was a member of that department for 15 years, retiring at the age of 68 in 1962.

Quadros’ family immigrated to Sausalito from the Azores in the 1880s. His father was a general laborer, working various jobs with the aid of his horse and buggy.

Quadros was graduated from Central School in Sausalito.

A coronet player, he was a lifetime member of the Local 6 of Musicians Union in San Francisco, playing at various functions in the Bay Area over the years.

Surviving are a son, Norman A. Quadros of Mill Valley; two brothers, Frank Quadros of San Francisco and Joseph Quadros of Yountville; a sister, Alice Stevenson of Pacifica; a grandchild and three great grandchildren.

Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Russell and Gooch Mortuary in Mill Valley. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Mill Valley. Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. The family requests memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
