Joel Paul Sharon, 69, attorney in Red case

Funeral for Joel Paul Sharon of San Rafael, father of Jared Sharon, assistant dean of the College of Marin, will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the chapel of the Hills of Eternity Cemetery, Colma.

Sharon, 69, died Thursday in a local hospital after a brief illness.

He was a retired assistant regional commissioner for the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. During his 36-year federal career, he was a leading attorney in the Harisiades case that resulted in 1946 in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that equated membership in the Communist Party with being an advocate of violent overthrow of the government.

Sharon was born in Wallingford, Conn., and educated at the University of Buffalo and St. Lawrence University. He was active in community and civic associations wherever his career took him, and was a member of the Federation of Citizens’ Associations, Washington’s unofficial governing body in the 1950s before the capital was granted home rule. He was a lifetime member of B’nai Brith and the Zionist Organization of America.

He moved to San Rafael seven years ago.

Sharon is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sonia Bear Sharon, of the home at 195 Nova Albion Way; his son, of Fairfax, and two grandsons.

The family prefers memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
