EDWARD P. MUMFORD, noted for research

Edward Philpot Mumford of San Rafael, longtime chairman of the biology department at Dominican College and a noted researcher in bio-geography, died unexpectedly yesterday after collapsing at his home.

Mumford, professor emeritus at the college, served as department head from 1948 to 1970, and then was a research scholar for two more years.

He was born in 1902 in Buckinghamshire, England. After earning his doctorate at Oxford University, Mumford came to this country on a fellowship to study at the University of California at Berkeley, where he ___(illegible)___ of arts degree and to do research in biology at Stanford University.

Before World War II, he explored islands in the South Pacific, publishing his findings on both sides of the Atlantic. During World War II, he collected data on the incidence and distribution of parasitic diseases in the South Pacific for the Navy Department.

Later he also did much research on parasitic diseases in other parts of the world, especially the Near and Middle East, in the belief that knowledge of such diseases is pertinent not only to the health of a country, but also to political, economic and social conditions.

In his research Mumford traveled extensively.

Before coming to Dominican, Mumford had lived in Palo Alto when he was involved in research at Stanford.

He was a member of Sigma Xi, the Hawaiian Entomological Society, Societe de Biogeographie, Bernice P. Bishop Museum Society, Faculty Club of the University of California and was a Commonwealth Fellow and a life member of the Oxford and Cambridge Union.

Survivors include his wife, Iris, and two sisters, Margaret Silcock and Mary Devadder, both of England.

No service is planned.

The family prefers memorial contributions either to the Mother Mary Raymond Memorial Scholarship fund at Dominican College or a favorite charity.
