CHARLES VON LOEWENFELDT
San Rafael resident
Burial services for Charles von Loewenfeldt will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.
Mr. von Liewenfeldt, a former San Rafael resident, died May 6 at his home in Medford, Ore. He was 77.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. von Liewenfeldt was prominent in international public relations for 50 years. He opened his own firm in San Francisco in 1947. His client list included the San Francisco Consulate General of Japan, the World Trade Club of San Francisco and Japan Air Lines.
He helped launch the trans-Pacific services of Japan Air Lines, co-founded the California Council for International Trade, promoted the Festival of France in San Francisco, organized t he first International Air Transport Association conference in post-war Japan and established San Francisco’s first sister city relationship with Osaka, Japan.
In 1970, after promoting the Osaka World Expo across the U.S. and Canada, Mr. von Loewenfeldt was named San Francisco’s Commissioner to the Exposition.
In recent years, he devoted his efforts to enhancing global studies in the public school systems in the U.S. and Japan. He worked with the National Council for Social Studies, the Japan Foundation and t he Embassy of Japan in Washington D.C.
In 1987, Mr. von Loewenfeldt was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun for a lifetime of fostering good will between Japan and t he U.S.
In 1988, he moved from San Rafael to his farm in Medford.
Mr. von Loewenfeldt’s wife, Lt. Sally Mary Hopkins, died earlier.
He is survived by a sister, Dushanne von Loewenfeldt of Woodacre; a son, Carl von Loewenfeldt of Colorado; five daughters, Maria Carder of Medford, Ore., Paula von Loewenfeldt of West Lafayette, Ind., Stephanie Haruna of Medford, Ore., Marta von Loewenfeldt of Minneapolis, Minn., and Madelon Grady of McGrath, Alaska. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
