REED R. ALLEN
The funeral for Reed Roundy Allen, longtime former leader in Marin County Mormon circles and a prominent mechanical engineer, will be held at noon Monday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 771 W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale.
Allen died Wednesday in a Santa Clara hospital a few days after suffering a heart attack. He was 61.
He and his family moved to the San Francisco peninsula about 18 months ago after living in Lucas Valley since 1956.
Allen was a mechanical engineer who helped design more than 50 major Bay Area structures including the Kaiser Building in Oakland, the South Terminal at San Francisco International Airport, the Linear Accelerator at Stanford and the Lawrence Laboratory at Berkeley, as well as many plants in the semiconductor industry. It was little known, but he also designed many fountains, including ones at the Northgate Shopping Mall, Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., Hyatt Union Square in San Francisco and Stanford University.
He was a charter member of the Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District Non-Marching Band as a clarinet player.
He was active for many years with his church’s High Council of the Santa Rosa Stake and served in bishoprics in Marin.
He was born and reared in Utah and was graduated from the University of Utah.
Allen also was an inventor and had just received a patent on a solar hearing device, his family said. He taught briefly at the College of Marin in building standards and inspection courses.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the china-Burma-India Theater in a support group to the Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, of Rotary and other community groups.
He is survived by his wife, Marty Grace Smith Allen of the home in Sunnyvale; two sons, Scott E. Allen of San Rafael and Kenneth R. Allen of Palo Alto; two daughters, Kathryn Bright and Venette Weeks of Lewiston, Utah; three brothers, LaGrand R. Allen of Salt Lake City, Mervin R. Allen of Rupert, Idaho, and Dr. Ross R. Allen of Logan, Utah; a sister, Afton A. England of Salt Lake City; and 10 grandchildren.
He was a member of the High Priest Quorum of the Sunnyvale Second Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Taylor, Gienger and Hays Mortuary, Mountain View, and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Utah.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was also the brother of the late William Wallace Allen of Norco, Calif.
