WALTER M. HUGHES
Kentfield – the funeral for Walter M. Hughes of Kentfield, longtime crusader for better public facilities for handicapped persons, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael, under the auspices of his Elks lodge.
Hughes died Saturday in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was 74. He lived in Kentfield in recent years.
Hughes was born in Whitmore, Shasta County. While working on a construction job in Redding in 1925, his legs were crushed by an overturned truck. He was confined to a wheelchair the rest of his life, requiring numerous operations.
He never let his handicap idle him. In 193, he moved to Marin, becoming a jeweler in San Rafael until he retired in 1957. He was an avid fisherman and trap shooter, belonging to the Marin Rod and Gun Club, and he loved bowling. He was longtime president of the Indoor Sports Club of Marin, and a frequent competitor in the California Wheelchair Association athletic competitions.
Hughes frequently spoke to local government bodies and service clubs, lobbying for ramps and other facilities to give handicapped persons more mobility.
He was a member of the San Rafael Lodge 1108, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, of the Moose Lodge of San Rafael, Exchange Club of San Rafael, and of the Marin Easter Seal Society.
He is survived by a son, Gaylord Hughes of La Habra; a step-daughter, Lucille Shoemaker of Inverness; a sister, Laura Hoxie of Clear Lake Highlands; three grandchildren, and seven step-grandchildren.
Burial will be private.
The family prefers memorial contributions to the Easter Seal Children’s Fund.
