EMILY GILBERT
The funeral for Emily Gilbert, mother of Donald L. Gilbert of Mill Valley, was held today in Walnut Creek.
Mrs. Gilbert died Monday in a Contra Costa County hospital, only 10 days short of her 90th birthday.
She was born in a small house opposite the Sonoma mission but was reared in San Francisco and lived there most of her life. A brother, the late Arthur M. Johnson, was makeup editor of the old Call-Bulletin newspaper.
Her mother owned the Kipling boarding house in San Francisco, where Mrs. Gilbert met her husband, Reginald, just arrived from Australia. They married in 1912 and Gilbert founded the Gilbert Machine Works. They celebrated their golden anniversary at their son’s home in Marin in 1962. Gilbert died in 1965.
In addition to her son in Marin, Mrs. Gilbert is survived by two sons, Kenneth Gilbert of Walnut Creek and Norman Gilbert of Florida and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the California Club.
The family prefers memorial donations to any favorite charity.
