Sister M. CECILE BURNS
Sister M. Cecile Burns, a Dominican nun of Our Lady of Lourdes Convent in San Rafael, died today at a local hospital at the age of 88.
She was born Alma Burns in San Francisco and grew up there, attending Sacred heart Elementary School and then Dominican Convent in San Rafael.
In 1909 she entered Dominican Convent and after her religious training, she served in many capacities in the schools operated by the order. She was known by students for her talents in music and dramatic production and for her youthful gaiety.
Among the places where she taught were San Francisco, Los Angeles, Reno, San Leandro, Vallejo and Napa.
When she retired, Sister Cecile first lived at San Domenico School in San Anselmo and later at Lourdes Infirmary in San Rafael.
Even in her later years, Sister Cecile kept in touch with old friends and students by letter or phone. She was also known for her love of birds and flowers and her interest in the Giants baseball team, an interest she shared with her brother, Edward, who died earlier.
Survivors include three cousins.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock at the Dominican Convent Chapel in San Rafael. Burial will be in the Dominican Cemetery in Benicia. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the convent chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dominican Sisters Infirmary.
