HAROLD KOEHLER
World War II vet
Harold G. Koehler of San Rafael died on April 27 at Marin General Hospital. He was 80.
Mr. Koehler was born in Akron, Ohio. He was a gifted auto mechanic by the age of 12, when he bought his aunt’s inoperative car for $2.50, repaired it and began driving it. (This was before a driver’s license was required in the state.)
He served as an airplane mechanic during World War II. In 1947, he built a midget race plane for the Goodyear Air Races. Entering the Civil Service in 1952, his career took him to five radar bases throughout the United States. He worked at the Mount Tamalpais radar site in Mill Valley from 1969 until his retirement in 1987.
Mr. Koehler was a devout Christian and member of Trinity Community Church in San Rafael. He was also a member of Marin Amateur Radio Club and Marin Radio Controlled Model Aircraft Club.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; a son, Rusty Koehler of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Sandra Miller of San Mateo; and four grandchildren.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. on May 7 at Trinity Community Church, 1675 Grand Ave., San Rafael. The memorial will be followed by a pot-luck dinner at 4:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Pantry, South Arlington U.M. Church, 790 S. Arlington St., Akron, Ohio 44306.
