CHARLES E. LEAVITT

A private family service for Charles E. Leavitt of Petaluma, a former longtime Mill Valley resident, was held today at Olivet Memorial Park in Colma.

He died in a local hospital Saturday after a short illness. He was 85.

He was born in Cloverdale, Sonoma County. He served in the military during World War I and later attended Heald’s Business College in San Francisco, where he studied automotive electronics.

He made car batteries in San Francisco during the 1920s, later moving to Mill Valley in 1934. He built his own business in Mill Valley, the former Locust Garage on Miller and Montford avenues, which he operated from 1946 to 1957.

Leavitt was a member of the Mill Valley Oddfellows Lodge No. 399.

His late wife, Irene F. Leavitt, died in March 1979.

He is survived by two daughters, Roberta Shephard of North Carolina and Marion McMillan of Nevada; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
