WILLIAM STEWART III
William L. Stewart III of San Rafael, a prominent yachtsman and great-grandson of the co-founder of the Union Oil Company, died Monday unexpectedly in Southern California. He was 53.
Stewart was born in Pasadena and was raised in Southern California. He attended the University of California at Berkeley and graduated from Stanford University. He also was a graduate of the Harvard University Business School.
He was employed for several years by the Union Oil Company. His great-grandfather, Lyman Stewart, was co-founder of the company.
Stewart was well-known as a yachtsman and was commodore of the St. Francis Yacht Club in 1967 and 1968. He also was a member of yacht clubs in Marin, Los Angeles and New York and the Cruising club of America. He also was active in yachting in Australia.
He also was a member of the Pacific Union Club and the Bohemian Club.
Stewart lived in Marin for the past 17 years.
He was a self-employed investor and financial consultant.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Barbara; five daughters, Julia Wayne of Oregon, Margaret Stewart and Sallie Lee Stewart, both of Washington, Polly Stewart of Paris, and Nell Stewart of New York; and one grandchild.
The funeral service will be private. The family prefers memorial donations to the Arcadia Methodist Hospital, Arcadia, Calif., or a favorite charity.
