MARY ALICE FREEMEN
Pioneer of Marin, Dead at Mt. View
The death of Mrs. Mary Alice Freemen at Mountain View, Santa Clara county last Friday evening, May 17th, removed another member of a pioneer family from the fast dwindling circle of old time California residents.
Mrs. Freemen was known in northern Marin and southern Sonoma county, having come with her parents when a child from Albany, New York, in 1856, and settled with them at Bloomfield, Sonoma county.
When 21 years of age she married to Mr. Emil R. E. Freemen, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Freemen, pioneer family of Tomales.
Mrs. Freemen who was 83 years of age, when death called, had been ill for some time, and the end came at the O’Connor Sanitarium in San Jose. Her husband died about two years ago.
After the marriage, the couple remained at Bloomfield for about four years, and them moved to San Luis Obispo, where they owned large cattle ranches and where Mr. Freeman (sic) served as Supervisor of the county for several years.
During the year 1907, Mr. and Mrs. Freemen moved to the orchard on El Camino Real, near Mt. View. Their home, wherever it was located, was always the rendezvous for a legion of friends and relatives in whom they took much pleasure and comfort.
While they had no children of their own they reared a niece, Mrs. Ida Skow, who resides near San Jose, and a nephew, the late Harry Freeman. Mrs. Skow and Mr. Freeman are children of the late Mr. George Freeman of Mt. View.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by relatives throughout the state. Those residing at Mountain View are Mrs. Mattie Chambers and Dr. Ward Slattery, cousins, and the nieces are Miss Ruth Freeman and Mrs. Jack McCarthy.
Rosary was recited at the Anway Funeral Home at Mountain View, Sunday at 8 p.m., and the funeral service were held at St. Joseph Church, Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock.
