BARBARA EDA FUNSTON

Barbara Eda Funston, 71, a 50-year resident of Mill Valley and member of a pioneer California military family, died on Saturday.

A native of San Francisco, Miss Funston was a retired bookkeeper and former Army officer during World War II.

Her father, Maj. Gen. Frederick Funston, was the commander of the Presidio at one time. Fort Funston, Funston Street and Funston Playground, all in San Francisco, are named after him.

After the 1906 earthquake, he came by horseback to the then almost completed Fairmont Hotel, declared marshal law and built a fire break by having homes of the wealthy dynamited on Van Ness Avenue.

Miss Funston has no survivors in her immediate family.

Funeral services are pending at the Neptune Society in San Francisco.
