Dr. B. F. Lyford Passed Away

Dr. Benjamin F. Lyford is dead. Death came to him at the family home near Reed’s station, Tuesday night. Dr. Lyford was one of the few remaining pioneer physicians of San Francisco. He had not engaged in the active practice of his profession for many years past on account of an almost total failure of his eyesight. In the early days he was one of the best known physicians in the state. In the celebrated Laura De Fair murder case he was one of the medical experts. Years ago he married Miss Hilarita Reed, who now survives him. After they married they established themselves on the southern portion of the Reed Rancho which was inherited by Mrs. Lyford. They built a beautiful house at Strawberry Point and it was here that they made their home. No children were born to them but they raised and educated many as though they were their own. Dr. Lyford joined with his wife in many charitable undertakings and there are hundreds who bless them both for their kindness.

The dead man was an earnest and consistent advocate of the cause of temperance. He could have made fortunes if he would have sold his Tiburon property without inserting anti-liquor clauses in the deeds. In his death this county loses an old and respected pioneer whose departure will cause more than a passing sorrow in the community.
