JAMES F. CRAFTS
A memorial service for James F. Crafts, retired chairman of the board of Firemen’s Fund Insurance Companies and a leader in Bay Area charity drives, will be held Friday in Palm Springs.
Crafts, 81, died Tuesday in Palm Springs after a brief illness.
Born and reared in Orange, N.J., and educated at Columbia University, Crafts joined Fireman’s Fund in 1930 and became company president in 1946. After 1961, he served as chairman of the corporate board and as chairman of the board’s executive committee until he retired nine years ago. He also served on the boards of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and of several banks.
He was a leader in establishing the San Francisco United Appeal – a predecessor to the United Way of the Bay Area – 1951.
He maintained homes in San Francisco and Palm Springs.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; two sons, James F. Crafts Jr. and David P. Crafts; two daughters, Judith Crafts Gorman and Ellen Oliver Pfaff, and several grandchildren.
