JOSEPH E. BYRNE

A funeral service for Joseph E. Byrne, a longtime Mill Valley resident and former mail carrier in the city, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Russell and Gooch Funeral Chapel in Mill Valley.

Byrne, 61, died at home Thursday after a long illness.

Byrne was born in San Francisco and raised in Mill Valley where he also lived most of his adult life.

He was a mail carrier for the postal service in Mill Valley for more than 15 years and later worked for many years as a driver with the Mill Valley Taxi Co.

He served in the Merchant Marine and then the Navy during World War II.

Byrne also was a coach for Little League in Mill Valley for many years and played ball himself on Tiburon and Mill Valley teams.

He is survived by his wife, Martha E. Byrne of Mill Valley; two sons, Patrick Byrne of Novato and Richard J. Byrne of Mill Valley; two daughters, Eileen A. Van Moppes of San Rafael and Jeannie M. Byrne of San Anselmo; his mother, Clarissa Byrne of Mill Valley; two sisters, Rita Raymond of Petaluma and Mary Ellen Brown of Mill Valley; three brothers, Robert Byrne of Mill Valley, Wick Byrne of Sonoma and Jim Byrne of Los Gatos; and four grandchildren.

The rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel and visitation will be held there after 9 a.m. the same day.

The family prefers memorial gifts to the Hospice of Marin, 77 Mark Drive, Suite No. 6, San Rafael 94903, or the Catholic Ladies League of Concern. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sebastopol.
