OSCAR NEAL MADSON
Oscar Neal Madson of Greenbrae died Monday in a Yountville hospital after a long illness. He was 82.
Madson moved to Marin in 1959 and was active in a number of local organizations before becoming ill.
He was born in West Branch, Iowa, and moved to California as a child, living in San Diego. He was one of the first Boy Scouts in the area in 1912. He lived in San Diego until World War I when he enlisted in the Navy in 1917.
In 1922 he married Verona Gates of Vacaville, a member of a pioneer California family.
Madson was an electrician all of his working life. He served at Mare Island during World War II and on Guam for four years after the war.
He retired in about 1964.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael and also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons No. 134 of Vacaville, Order of the Eastern Star No. 28, both of Vacaville, California Bodies, San Francisco, and the Shrine Club and Sirs of San Rafael.
Madson helped organize an Eastern Star lodge when he was in Guam.
He also was a past commander of the American Legion in Vacaville and a speaker for Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael for several years.
He enjoyed children and baseball and worked with numerous youth groups at various times.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Virginiamae Stout of Mill Valley, and two grandsons.
No services are planned.
The family prefers memorial donations to Multiple Sclerosis, 594 Howard St., San Francisco, or A.L.S. Research, care of Pacific Medical Center, Clay and Webster streets, San Francisco.
