ESMERALDO DE LA GARZA

Funeral was held Monday at Keaton’s Chapel of Marin for Esmeraldo “Del” De La Garza who died Friday at a local hospital following a short illness. He was 59.

De La Garza was employed as chef at the Blue Rock Inn in Larkspur for the past 10 years.

He was a native of Texas and grew up there. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in the China-Burma-Indian theater during World War II as a sergeant with the Flying Tigers.

After the war he served as an engineer with the Air Force in Florida and the Caribbean and later switched to the Army where he was a mess steward with the Infantry and also a military policeman. He retired from the service in 1962.

Since that time he had worked as a chef in Marin County restaurants, including the Holiday Inn in Terra Linda. He was a member of the Bartenders and Culinary Workers Union Local 126 of San Rafael. He made his home at 1942 Center Road.

Surviving are four sons, Tony, Brook, Brad and Brent De La Garza, all of Novato, and two daughters, Patricia Smith of Mill Valley and Cynthia Bonderov of Hawaii.

Burial was at Bahia Valley Memorial Park. Memorial contributions to the Heart Fund are preferred by the family.
