JOHN J. WHITE, Local Contractor, Dies From Heart Attack

A sudden heart attack, while returning to this city from Mineral, Lassen county, Monday morning, ended the life of John J. White, local contractor, and partner in the firm of Cuffe & White, road builders.

Death came while White was driving in an automobile with his wife, Katherine White, and his grandson, Conway Cuffe. The family had reached a point about 4 miles north of Orland, Glenn county, when White, who was driving suddenly crumbled and fell back in his seat. Mrs. White unfamiliar with driving, grabbed the wheel, but the machine swerved off the highway into a fence where the engine was killed.

Mrs. White stopped a passing machine, and the dead man was taken to Orland, and later brought to San Rafael, where numerous friends and relatives were shocked to learn of Mr. White’s sudden passing.

The funeral was held today from St. Raphael’s church where a requiem mass was said at 9:30 in the morning under the direction of Keaton & Dusel. The casket was banked in flowers brought by friends, who had known the deceased for many years, both in his business and social life. Prior to the services friends called at the home of Mrs. Frank Cuffe, a daughter, living at Morningside Court, San Anselmo, where the body lay in state for a time. Interment was at Mt. Olivet cemetery in this city.

Besides the widow, Katherine (Budwig) White, four sons and a daughter survive. They are Thomas, Favian, Marshall, James and Mrs. Frank C. Cuffe.

White was born in San Francisco. He came to this county in 1911, and for a time operated a garage at Fairfax, and did a general trucking business. Five years ago he and Frank Cuffe, his son-in-law, formed a partnership, and the firm of Cuffe and White has done much road work and excavation in this section since.

White was a hard worker, sincere and honest in his dealings. These qualities endeared him to those who knew him best, and will be a lasting memory of a life spent in always striving for the best.
