EVELYN C. BARBIER Dies At 79
Funeral for Evelyn Elizabeth Cochrane Barbier, member of a pioneer San Rafael family, and mother of the late San Rafael city councilman, Harry A. Barbier, will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Harry M. Williams Mortuary, San Rafael. Inurnment will be private.
Mrs. Barbier died Sunday in a local convalescent hospital after a lingering illness. She was 79.
She was born in San Rafael in 1894, the daughter of James William and Lizzie Atwater Cochrane. Her father was for many years the Marin County district attorney. Her uncle Patrick H. Cochrane was county assessor, and another uncle, Michael F. Cochrane, owned the Independent, one of the predecessors to the Independent-Journal.
She graduated as a registered nurse from Stanford Lane Hospital and served during World War I as a Navy nurse. Mrs. Barbier worked as a registered nurse for some 54 years in California, serving in all Marin County’s hospitals over the years.
She retired about 10 years ago, after being nurse for the late Dr. Homer E. Marston for 10 years.
Her husband, the late Harry Alfred Barbier, died in 1957. The family home was on Center Street, San Rafael, where she and her husband first made their home in 1939. Her childhood home, the Cochrane house, was torn down when San Rafael City Hall was built.
She was a member of Wilkins Post No. 37, American Legion of San Rafael.
Her son, Harry A. Barbier, San Rafael city councilman, died last October.
She is survived by her daughter, Clare Barbier Dudley of Los Gatos and by three grandsons, Harry Ronald Barbier and Alan Richard Barbier of San Rafael and Kirk Brian Dudley of Los Gatos.
