VERLING MARSHALL
Funeral was held this afternoon at St. Francis Episcopal Church for Verling W. Marshall who died Sunday of an apparent heart attack while playing golf in Rohnert Park. He was 74.
Marshall had been a resident of Novato for the past 10 years since retiring as assistant superintendent of the chino School district in San Bernardino County.
He was a native of La Junta, Colorado, and received his teaching credentials from Arizona State Teachers College in 1927. He also held a bachelor’s degree from Colorado College of Education and a master’s degree from the University of Southern California.
Marshall taught in elementary schools in Arizona before becoming superintendent in Tempe, Arizona, for one year. He then taught at Arizona State Teachers College (now Arizona State University.)
Later he served as supervisor of student teachers at Rivers, Arizona, and as principal of elementary schools in chino before becoming director of elementary education, supervisor of curriculum and assistant superintendent for instruction.
He was a member of San Rafael Elks Lodge 1108, a life member of the Parent-Teacher Association, a member of Sons in Retirement, a past president of the Lions Club, Tempe, Arizona, a past master of the Masonic Lodge, Tempe, Arizona, a past master counselor of DeMolay, Bisbee, Arizona, a past area governor of Toastmasters, holder of the Boy Scout Silver Beaver award for 41 years, Southern Section Representative for the California Teachers College … youth activities chairman at the Tamalpais Golf Club and the Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Novato; two sons, Verling W. Marshall III of Lancaster, Los Angeles county and L. William Marshall of Manila; two daughters, Lois Ann Hutchings of Calistoga and Dorothy Guersney; two sisters, Frances Callison of Warren, Arizona, and Mary K. Eaton of Tucson, Arizona; a brother, Charles T. Marshall of Los Angeles and 10 grandchildren.
Burial will be at Pomona Cemetery in Los Angeles County. Local arrangements were handled by Keaton’s Chapel of Marin. Memorial contributions to the American Heart Fund are preferred by the family.
