BYRL R. SALSMAN, 72, former state justice
Byrl R. Salsman of Novato, a retired state Appellate Court Justice and former state senator and assemblyman, died in a local hospital yesterday after a brief illness. He was 72.
Salsman served as a First Appellate Court justice for eight years after being appointed by Gov. Edmund G. Brown Sr. in 1961.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Kan. He was a 1928 graduate of Stanford University.
Salsman practiced law in Palo Alto for 18 years and served four years on the Palo Alto City Council.
From 1939 to 1942, Salsman served from Santa Clara County in the Assembly and was elected to two terms as a state senator beginning in 1943. He later served as a Superior Court judge in Santa Clara County.
Shortly before retiring from the appellate court bench in San Francisco, Salsman moved to Novato.
Salsman was a member of the American Bar Association, the California Conference of Judges, the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, the Masonic Lodge of Palo Alto and the First Lutheran Church of Palo Alto.
He worked in real estate in Marin for four years after leaving the bench and was a member of the Marin County Board of Realtors. He also was a member of the committee that rewrote the organization’s bylaws.
Salsman was an avid gardener.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Eleanore Salsman of Novato; a daughter, Marilyn Stockfleth of Corte Madera; a son, Richard Salsman of Saratoga; a brother, Earl Salsman of San Diego, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Sheppard of the Hills Lutheran Church in Tiburon.
