HERBERT EDWARDS JR.
Memorial services for Herbert Threlkeld Edwards Jr. of Greenbrae, formerly assistant administrator and direction of the international motion picture program for the United States Information Agency, were held Saturday in Washington, D.C.
Edwards died Tuesday in New York City after a heart attack. He was 76.
He was a native of Bethlehem, Pa. Edwards moved to Greenbrae with his wife, India, two years ago from Palm Desert, where he had lived since his retirement 10 years ago.
Edwards began making documentary films while working as assistant to Sir Wilfred T. Grenfell at the latter’s Medical and Social Work Foundation in Labrador and Newfoundland. In 1942, he joined the newly created division of cultural affairs of the State Department and, when the United States Information Agency was established after World War II, he became assistant administrator.
Edwards and his wife, India, former vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee, were on a nationwide tour promoting her book, “Pulling No Punches: Memoirs of a Woman in Politics,” when he died in New York. His wife’s book is about her recollections of the 1948 democratic presidential campaign in which she was a principal supporter of Harry Truman.
Besides his wife, Edwards is survived by a sister, Rhoda Thorp of Bethlehem, Penn., a stepdaughter, India M. Williams of Belvedere and five granddaughters.
Contributions may be made to Girls Clubs of America, New York City.
