Dr. William Smith, 62, San Rafael internist
Private funeral was today for Dr. William Burgett Smith, longtime San Rafael internist, who died Friday after apparently suffering a heart attack while vacationing in Carmel. He was 62.
Smith had practiced in Marin County 30 years.
He was born and reared in Illinois and was a graduate of Northwestern University. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago in 1940. He was [a] member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity.
During World War II, he served as a flight surgeon with the Army Air Corps. After the war, he set up practice in Marin.
He also had taught at the University of California Medical School and had been chief of the departments of medicine at both Marin and Ross general hospitals.
He was a past president of the Marin Medical Society and was a member of the California and American medical societies and the American and California Societies of Internal Medicine.
He also had served with Guide Dogs for the Blind, the American Heart Association and the Cancer Society.
Smith is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, William B. Smith Jr. of San Rafael and Robert Bruce Smith of San Francisco; two daughters, Dabney Jane Smith of San Anselmo and Sydney Elizabeth Smith of Ukiah, and two stepsons, Craig L. Faulkner of Santa Barbara and Scott G. Faulkner of San Rafael.
The family prefers memorial gifts to a favorite charity.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was the uncle of Mrs. Kathryn Verner Foley of San Diego and Lee Verner Sidner of Indianapolis. He was a native of Grand Ridge, Illinois.
