RICHARD G. ANDERSON

Richard George Anderson of Petaluma, an often-decorated San Francisco police officer, died yesterday in a Marin hospital after a long illness. He was 41.

Anderson received many awards during his 13 years with the police department, including a silver medal for valor given for a shootout with a robber. He also was the recipient of three bronze medals for bravery and eight meritorious conduct awards, among other honors.

During his years as a San Francisco policeman, Anderson served with the department’s tactical Squad, noise abatement squad and Crime Task Force. He last worked as a motorcycle traffic officer.

Anderson was born in San Francisco and lived there until moving to Sonoma County nine years ago.

He was a member of the San Francisco Police Officers Association and the Municipal Motorcycle Officers of California.

Anderson is survived by his wife, Patricia, and three sons, Mark, Kristofer and Robert Anderson.

A memorial service for him will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 4620 California Street, San Francisco. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions to the University of California Cancer Research Program would be preferred by the family.
