Memorial service set for Janet H. Witter
A memorial service for Janet Hutchinson Witter of San Anselmo, a writer and photographer, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ross.
Mrs. Witter died July 5 during a visit to New York City. She was 67.
For two decades she traveled along the Pacific coast and to Africa and Nepal, where she photographed animal and marine life and wrote accounts for national magazines such as Sports Afield, Outdoor Life and Look.
Her most recent assignment was a photographic safari to Africa in February.
She was born in Oakland and was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1931. Three years later she married Henry Clay Alexander, chairman of the board of directors of Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. of New York.
Moving to New York, she founded the Recreation Services for Children at Bellevue Hospital. She also was chairman of an American Red Cross chapter in Katonah, N.Y., during World War II.
Following her husband’s death in 1969, she moved to Marin, and in 1973 married Wendell W. Witter, a vice president and director of the Dean Witter & Co. brokerage firm.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Witter is survived by four children: Dr. Henry C. Alexander III and David G. Alexander, both of New York; Thomas H. Alexander of San Diego and Janet A. Tell of Newport, R.I. Also surviving are four grandchildren.
