WILFRED A. CURTIS

Retired Air Marshal Wilfred A. Curtis of Toronto, stepfather of William Englebright of Tiburon, died Sunday at his home after a long illness. He was 83.

Curtis was a top officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, serving as commander-in-chief of overseas units from 1941 to 1944. He became chief of air staff, with the rank of air marshal, in 1947, and retired from the service in 1953.

He served as a fighter pilot in France during World War I, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross. Curtis also was awarded the commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1943 and numerous other medals.

He served as chancellor of York University from 1960 to 1968.

Private funeral was held today in Toronto.
