ZADA HACKMAN
Funeral for Zada Evelyn Hackman. Member of an early day Marin family, will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Keaton’s Mortuary.
Mrs. Hackman, 83, died unexpectedly Monday at her San Rafael home.
She was born in Stockton, the only child of Charles and Lena Burkhart. The family lived briefly in Marysville then moved to San Rafael in 1886 when she was 5 years old.
Burkhart founded the first moving and storage business in Marin, Burkhart’s Express. The red brick building in which it was located still stands on B Street.
As a young girl, Mrs. Hackman rode her horse and buggy over the young town’s dirt streets and in the surrounding hillsides, according to her family.
She attended local schools, including Dominican College.
Mrs. Hackman was one of the original members of the First Methodist Church of San Rafael and its oldest living member.
She was married to the late William E. Hackman, a gardener and warehouseman at Hamilton Air Force Base. He died in 1956.
Mrs. Hackman is survived by four daughters, Nona Shipley, Muriel Burd, Gloria Taylor and LaVerne Pareto, all of San Rafael; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Another daughter, Carol Paganetti, preceded her in death.
Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno.
