JOSEPH GUNN

Private funeral has been held in Arizona for former Mill Valley resident Joseph R. Gunn, 73, who died in a Sun City, Ariz., hospital Saturday.

Gunn retired after 39 years of engineering service with the Standard Oil Co. of California. His last assignment was at the Richmond refinery.

He was born in Nashville, Tenn., but grew up in Dallas, Tex., earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Texas and then a master’s degree at the University of California at Berkeley.

Gunn lived many years in Mill Valley and was a member of the city council at one time. He also was a life member and past post commander of the Mill Valley Post 284 of the American Legion and a life member of the 40 and 8 Society.

Following retirement, Gunn and his wife, Mercedes, traveled extensively. A year’s trip around the world preceded their moving to Sun City.

In Sun City, he was a member of the Boswell Hospital Volunteer Service and headed a hospital foundation campaign. He also was a deacon in the United Church of Sun City.

Gunn is survived by his wife; a son, Joseph R. Gunn III of Bangkok; a stepson, David S. Bartlett of San Jose; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Frank O. Merrill of San Rafael; four sisters, Mrs. Henry C. Fulcher of Wichita Falls, Tex.; Mrs. E. H. Scarborough of Dallas, Tex.; Mrs. John Keebler of Willows, and Mrs. R. L. Brickell of Alexandra, Va.; two brothers, Robert W. Gunn of Tiburon and Harold Gunn of Lincoln University, Penn., and seven grandchildren.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the Boswell Hospital Foundation or to the Sunshine Service, Sun City.
