ROBERT T. GRAY
A private funeral was held yesterday for Robert T. Gray of Novato, former owner of Payless Drug Store in San Rafael.
Gray, 68, died Wednesday at his home.
In 1947 Gray and a partner established the drug store next to the Rafael theater. Later the Payless moved several blocks down Fourth Street.
Gray sold the store in 1973 and the location was taken over by Merrill’s Drugs. He remained a major stockholder in the Payless store at Northgate.
Gray began his career with a wholesale drug firm in Salt Lake. He was later a clerk and then general manager for the Sontag Drug Co. and then served as operations manager for three Skaggs Drug Co. stores, including one in San Rafael.
Gray’s wife, Helen E. Gray, is owner of the Modern Eve women’s shop in Northgate.
Gray was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He had lived in California 41 years and in Marin 31 years.
He was an avid yachtsman and a member of the San Rafael Elks Lodge and the Sonoma Trail Blazers. He also was a past president of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce.
Gray was a veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife, Gray is survived by a daughter, Roni Thompson of Napa and one granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Williams and Heffernan Mortuary.
The family prefers memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
Entombment was in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.
