Janet Gavin, music trade magazine editor

Janet Gavin, 64, of Mill Valley, who with her husband published a weekly music trade magazine, died this morning after collapsing at her home.

Mrs. Gavin had worked for 17 years as country music editor of the Gavin Report, a weekly San Francisco-based magazine which rated popular music for radio stations. The magazine is distributed throughout the United States and in several foreign countries.

She was born in Rock Elm, Wis., and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor’s degree in English and education. She received a master’s degree in art from San Francisco State University.

Mrs. Gavin, a Mill Valley resident for 31 years, was the founder and first president of the Mill Valley Chapter of the American Association of University Women. A scholarship award, the Janet Breed Gavin Endowment, was first awarded by the association in 1973.

Mrs. Gavin also was a member of the Mill Valley Community Church, the Country Music Association, and the Mill Valley Parent-Teacher Association.

As radio and television chairman for the AAUW she spearheaded the effort to create a public broadcasting station in the Bay Area, a drive which resulted in the establishment of KQED.

In addition to her husband, William S. Gavin, she is survived by three daughters, Ann Sample and Sally White, both of Scio, Ore., and Janet Shaks of Trinidad, a son, Gregory Gavin of Ashland, Ore.; a sister, Elizabeth Nelson of Crosslake, Minn., and eight grandchildren.

Funeral will be Friday, but a time has not been set. Arrangements are under the direction of the Russell and Gooch Funeral Chapel, Mill Valley.

A Death Notice in the Aug. 25th paper corrects the daughter’s name to Janet Shanks. The funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, August 26.
