Veteran Police Officer Dies

I. P. McDowell, 65, died at a local hospital late yesterday afternoon. He had been confined to his home at 218 Mission Street for the past six weeks, although he had been ill for a year.

A newspaper man by profession, McDowell had been on the desk at the San Rafael police department for the past eight years.

He was a native of Pontiac, Illinois and a graduate of the University of Illinois. His newspaper career was started as a reporter on the Champagne Gazette.

Twenty-five years ago, McDowell came to the Bay Area. For a time he was editor of the Times-Star in Alameda. Later he was in charge of the Oakland office for the San Francisco Examiner.

Four years later, the family moved to San Rafael and McDowell became correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle. He wrote a number of stories published in detective magazines based upon features he covered at San Quentin Prison.

Besides his wife, Mary, McDowell is survived by four children. They are: Donald McDowell, a fireman at Hamilton Field; S/Sgt. John (Jack) McDowell, a radio operator at the same base; Mrs. Catherine Smith and Mrs. Elizabeth Rivers.

Services will be held at the Harry M. Williams Mortuary, Saturday, at 2 o’clock. Members of the San Rafael police department will act as pallbearers, according to Chief Frank Kelly.
