FREDERICK SHERMAN Jr.
Studio potter

Frederick Barreda Sherman Jr., who was raised in Mill Valley and became a well-known studio potter, died Aug. 27. He was 72.

Memorial services were held for the San Francisco native in San Jose yesterday Mr. Sherman worked out of San Jose and Albion and was a leader in artist organizations. He was a member and past president of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California. He was a longtime member of the National Council for Education in Ceramic Arts and the author of the Glaze Bucket, a column in an association magazine where he shared glaze and clay formulas and techniques.

Mr. Sherman served as president of the Preservation Action Council, and worked to save the landmark San Jose Theater in San Jose.

He was a graduate of Tamalpais High School, College of Marin and San Jose State. He went on to teach English and speech in San Jose.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella Sherman of San Jose; mother, Cornelia Sherman of Mill Valley; and sister, Sally Taylor of Mill Valley.
