Former Local Boy Killed In Plane

Lieutenant Frank C. Fechteler, grandson of Judge W. W. Morrow and formerly a San Rafael boy, was instantly killed last Monday when his airplace fell a distance of 200 feet at Se(lfridge?) Field, near Mount Clemens, M??

In command of a flying squad which was practicing for an exhibition to be given the next day, Fechteler, in a Spad army plane, was flying low when the machine stalled, went into a tail spin and crashed to the ground.

Fechteler was known as one of the most expert flyers in the United States Navy. He was born in San Rafael, his mother, now residing at Annapolis, being the daughter of Judge and Mrs. W. W. Morrow, and his father, who died about a year ago, was Admiral A. F. Fechteler. A brother of the dead officer, Lieutenant William M. Fechteler, is also in the United States Navy.

Lieutenant Fechteler served with distinction throughout the war. By an act of Congress his class was permitted to graduate from the Naval Academy before the completion of the regular course in order that the young naval men could join the forces during the war. He was not then 20 years of age. He is survived also by two sisters, Margaret, wife of Commander Tays, U.S.N., and Mrs. John Manner, of New York City.
