FILIP OPLER

Funeral for Filip Opler of San Rafael was held today at Sinai Memorial Chapel in San Rafael. Burial was in Colma.

Opler, 68, died Saturday in a local hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Sosnowice, Poland, Opler spent World War II in seven German concentration camps, including Buchenwald, Auschwitz and Dachau. His parents died in the camps. “I wanted to survive to see the end, to see what would happen,” he recalled years later.

Opler emigrated to this country in 1951, coming to San Rafael to live with an aunt, Eva Diner. She was the owner of Marin Smart Shop, a clothing store she had opened in San Rafael in 1928, and took him into the business. He took it over when she died in 1956 and still owned it at the time of his death.

He resided at 207 Coleman Drive.

He was a member of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce and International Order of Odd Fellows.

Opler is survived by two sisters, Eva Standlander of Texas and Lea Herman of Pennsylvania, and a brother, Morris Opler of Brazil.
