Long Illness Ends For E. H. Conway
While not unexpected, the death of Edward H. Conway, highly respected resident of San Rafael for many years, came as a shock last Friday to his countless number of friends and admirers.
His passing closed a long period of patient suffering which began with his retirement from active business a few years ago. Even his illness, the seriousness of which only he alone was aware, did not prevent his taking a genuine interest in the conduct of the city’s business affairs, and he filled with honor the office of City Councilman for one term.
One instance of his devotion to the administration of the municipal government is cited as occurring shortly before the close of his term of office. An important measure came before the board for attention. But two members were present, and the number required for action was three. Two of the board members were out of town. Councilman Conway was confined to his bed and had been for the past week with the malady which caused his death. The predicament of the board was explained over the telephone to Mrs. Conway. In a moment she called back saying, “Ed will come.” Ill as he was, Councilman Conway attended the meeting, voted and returned to his home. For many years Mr. Conway conducted a plumbing business here.
He leaves a devoted widow, Mrs. Della M. Conway, who has spent many an hour at the bedside of her husband in his last illness, and a brother, formerly residing here, Miles Conway.
The funeral was held Monday, with services at St. Raphael’s church, a great gathering of sorrowing friends attending to pay their last respects to the deceased. The burial, conducted by the F. E. Sawyer Company, was made in Mount Olivet cemetery.
