MARSHALL F. SILVERTHORN
Funeral will be held tomorrow for Marshall F. Silverthorn, a lifelong Marin County resident, who died in a San Francisco hospital Saturday after a long illness. He was 55.
A native of Sausalito, he lived in Mill Valley and was a graduate of Tamalpais High School. During World War II her served with an Army anti-aircraft artillery unit in Europe.
He worked as a marine draftsman and vice president of an engineering firm in San Francisco. He was chief inspector for the MV Golden Gate ferry, the first ferry put into service by the Golden Gate Bridge District.
Silverthorn was a grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Marshall who settled in west Marin in 1876 and operated a store in Point Reyes Station. His father, the late Willis A. Silverthorn, was a railroad engineer for 45 years in and around Marin County.
A railroad buff, Silverthorn was a member of the Railroad Historical Society, the Society of Naval Architects and the Marin Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary K. Silverthorn of Mill Valley, daughters Marsha Staroba of Fremont and Frances Zernow of Sacramento, and an uncle, Ted Silverthorn of San Francisco.
Services begin at 2 p.m. at the Marin Lutheran Church in Corte Madera, followed by burial at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery. The family prefers contributions to the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco for cancer research.
