LUELLA R. DUDLEY

A funeral for Luella Rose DuBois Dudley, a 101-year-old San Rafael resident, will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Keaton’s Mortuary.

Mrs. Dudley died at home Friday after a long illness. She had lived in Marin County more than 80 years.

Born in Michigan, Mrs. Dudley went west in a wagon train at the time Sitting Bull and his warriors were sweeping down on the prairies. Her family’s trip was delayed many times when the settlers had to seek refuge from the Indians.

After living first in Washington State, Mrs. Dudley came to Marin County in the 1890s. Her first husband was Ernest DuBois, a member of the pioneering Marin family after which San Rafael’s DuBois Street is named.

After the death of her first husband, she married Dr. Hubert W. Dudley, an eye specialist. He died in 1950.

Mrs. Dudley was one of the first women in the area to drive a car. She drove around in a 1915 Overland touring car.

She also was an active bridge player, participating in many tournaments. She was one of the earliest members of the San Rafael Improvement Club and the Tamalpais Center Women’s Club.

She leaves three nieces, Rose Mary Wiles, Marian Clem and Helen Howard, and one nephew, Alfred Moore. She also leaves three great-nieces and three great-nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind, San Rafael.
